From the age of 11, I was trained to be a classical pianist. I studied with a wide variety of highly qualified teachers throughout high school and college. Along with years of playing in church bands and leading church music from the piano, I have also accompanied musicians and vocalists at the professional level and performed as a freelance pianist. I began teaching private piano lessons by request in middle school and continued to teach for nearly two decades. My experience in piano is complemented by my Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education and Master's in Advanced Study in Education. I have extensive experience teaching children of all ages, including both private tutoring and classroom teaching. As a lifelong learner, I am always researching ways to improve my practices and expand my knowledge. I can provide updated background checks and PA state clearances.
Music lessons at Joyeux Piano Studio are typically 30 minutes. Depending on the student's needs and preferences, lessons will typically include some rote (memorized) music and note-reading songs, interspersed with some games to reinforce rhythm and theory concepts. I also try to incorporate chord-based pop or jazz music to round out the experience and make sure that students always have something especially fun to work on. Most of my students work from the Piano Safari curriculum as their core work, but I customize the progression and supplement to ensure that everyone gets what they need. Students are provided with an individualized spreadsheet that I update weekly with links to reminder videos and other resources to support at-home practice.
I work with students as young as 4 years old, beginning with concepts of musical awareness and building a love for music while introducing more focused work on the piano in a developmentally appropriate way. Although the bulk of my experience has been working with children, I have found that adults also learn very well in a fun and supportive environment.
In order to benefit fully from lessons, you will need regular access to an 88-key digital piano with a pedal or a real piano. I am happy to offer recommendations if you need help finding a good instrument. Books will be $20 to begin, and will typically be used for several months of study.
